I think I truly realized my definition of Tango today...and why I love it so much.
(Now, hold on. This may get a bit too deep for some of y'all, but bear with me)...
TANGO
Tango is made up of two seemingly opposing, but actually interlinked ideas...I think:1.) Tango is what happens when two opposites are in perfect balance, or continually striving for it - one giving way to the other, one pulling when the other pushes, inevitably tied together & inevitably their own. Male & female. Yin & Yang. Two partners...just listening & responding.
2.) At the same time, it is two equal & similar forces striving to speak at once & speak together, simultaneously, longing to be heard... This creates an ecstatic sort of pull & friction...tension......energy, that keeps our bodies in motion...constantly falling into & out of a complete sort of balance...always moving...it creates that tension & fire that we see when we watch the dance or feel for moments at a time....which arises from two beings truly trying to mold together as one & stay completely their own...
When we dance tango, we strive for balance & to be heard. To be one & two. To speak & be spoken to...each conversation different. Every moment creating, inhaling & exhaling at once...and every moment purely new.
We long to be off balance so we can fall back into balance. We long to be in balance so we may feel the fall again.....we long to stay our ground, always keeping the same distance & the same connection, so that we may listen most carefully & react most authentically, speak most purely, in balance with the music, and always, always responding to what is within us, connected to us & around us.
Two bodies....in a sense, really kind of.......representing every aspect of the human connection & the balance & pull of life in general. In a dance.
I....really think it's so. And...I really think it's wonderful.
I do.
So for all those of you who have continually asked me, 'Hey. You dance. Why do you think of Tango so differently...?" Well. That's why.
Just my musings in a car, today. But...yes. That's why.
